attributed to one Chaz
Bundick of
Columbia, SC. Type
this fellow's name
and/or recording
moniker into a
search engine and
you'll come into a
deluge of blog posts
and articles on the
21st century
synthpop updates
that this fellow has
been generating for
a year or two now.
With the benefit of
revisionism, Bundick
is taking the clean,
clear pool of sounds
from a bygone 1980s
musical environment
and coloring them in
with influences that
may not have been
prevalent enough at
the time. Artists
like Arthur
Russell, 400
Blows, and other
fringe experimental
electronic producers
championed by
today's alt-stars
are all slightly
reverberated in Toro
Y Moi creations,
whose emotional
palette also
reflects the
yearnings of 20
years worth of indie
music that spawned
genres like
slowcore,
post-rock,
and (pre-Hot
Topic)
emo. Not
quite as progressive
as a Stevie
Wonder or
Shuggie Otis
pop groove, rather
the music relies
on years worth of
access to hip hop
and DJ culture,
which in turn has
offered millions of
listeners access to
funk, soul, rare
grooves, and just
about anything one
would want to
reappropriate for a
cool purpose.
It seems important
to realize that in
this era of
information and
re-imagination,
sampling and
remixing have become
an integral part of
production
techniques. At
times, it sounds
as if a Toro Y Moi
song is recycling
itself, with
original melodies
from sampled sounds
on top of
synthesized drums,
not to mention the
arpeggio flourishes
thrown in for
fanciful measure.
What's more is that
Chaz seems to toy
with the audio
fidelity of his
tunes, avoiding the
label of lo-fi that
has been quickly
slapped onto
"bedroom pop"
projects and
appropriately
applied to fried
recordings of
Ariel Pink,
John Maus,
etc. (whose
productions are kind
of the precedents of
this new sound),
while proving
just what
technology can do
these days from a
point-and-click EQ
perspective.
Anyway, contained in
this session are 3
short 'n sweet tunes
- "Talamak",
"You Hid",
and "Freak
Love", which all
fit nicely together
thanks to TYM's
cohesive, stripped
down setup and are
back to back like a
triptych on the new
Carpark-released
LP, "Causers Of
This".
Interestingly
enough, the
stimulating
interview segments
w/ Tedward are
noticeably longer
than the tunes
themselves...
This actually marks
the first
performance of the
act as a two-piece,
with Mr. Andy on
board for the live
accompaniment. Would
it be wrong for us
to conclude that
this installment of
M+Y is a fitting
companion to the
Neon Indian
edition of Naked
Fridays? Nah,
it's *chill*.

Professor McHenry at the Art Institute of Charleston sent me an e-mail about
wanting to make a class field trip to American Apparel. The classes she
teaches are in the Fashion and Retail Management Department.
After the green light was given a handout was constructed and we were
good to go.
Her Intro to Retail class came by tonight and I taught them all about
American Apparel's vertical integration and radical company design. They
had knowledge of how other retail companies are run and were very
impressed with everything AA had to offer.
We snapped a quick little class photo and then everyone was excited to
shop around the store, especially after they learned about what goes into
making the garments.
The weather outside is not quite Winter and not quite Spring, but the
California Select Original Cuffed and Cropped Sweater is perfect for both
seasons! Whether worn layered over a bodysuit or on its own, it's the
perfect way to bring in Spring!

No, it wasn't a real murder silly...and no it wasn't PETA screaming bloody murder
for once. This Fashion Week, our friend Rachel Antonoff presented a lovely murder mystery of a
presentation. Her Nancy Drew inspired flirty dresses really complimented our
hosiery! Check out my BFF Pinky Geldof and one of our fave mags, Nylon uncovering the The Mystery at Lafayette

I wish I could have been there with her...we totes would have cracked the case

Hailing from a
different part of
the world might be a
large contributing
factor to this
group's sound
coming from a
different place in
the popmosphere.
While in keeping
with the post-Animal
Collective melodic
dreamscape strain of
electronic-tinged
pop, there is a
lack of irony and
introversion in this
group that
allows their songs
to flourish
wildly.
Offering up 3 songs
that would otherwise
seem quite sonically
spread apart from
one another, the
constraints of the
studio and the
minimalist approach
that the group
embraced based on
such limitations
links these tracks
together nicely. The
shimmer that one
would normally hear
on a song like
"Internet
Warrior" becomes
a glimmer, as if
the song's shine
is obscured by its
now submerged &
subdued
variation. It's
only appropriate
then that the
group's current
standout single
"Swim" is
stuck right in the
middle of this body
of water. Let us not
forget the first
song the group
performs in this
session, "Eleanor
Speaks", which
has a touch of
drone to it,
pulling the listener
in as it were.
As for the banter,
well, these guys are
relatively
matter-of-fact, but
seeing as all
musicians have a
penchant for being
funny (or trying to
be funny), you can
tell that they
aren't taking
themselves too
seriously. Which is
a bit of a surprise,
because they're
clearly taking their
music very seriously
and it shows.
